Joni Mitchell is one of the foremost musical artists of our time. In this presentation, we take a journey through her career as a singer, a songwriter, and a performer. Beginning with a brief biographical sketch, we will present her artistic achievement in 5 themes: Before the Beginning, True Confessions, The Quest, Jazzin’ Rockin’ Synthesizin’, and Bringing It All Back Home. We illustrate each theme with live performances of her songs.

Peter Kaminsky is Professor Emeritus at University of Connecticut, having retired in May 2021 after 28 years teaching in the Department of Music. In retirement, he is happily pursuing research interests, playing guitar, traveling, socializing, and cycling, enjoying 40+ years of marriage to Kim, and staying away from academic politics.
Megan Lyons is currently Assistant Professor of Music Theory at Furman University. Her research areas include music theory pedagogy, music encoding and its analysis, and the text-music relationships in the female singer-songwriter genre; she currently serves as founder and co-editor of SMT-Pod, an audio publication. In her free time, Megan enjoys going on long runs, completing sudoku puzzles, and doing escape rooms.
Emmy Dell’Orfano is a graduate student and Honors Laureate in music education at the University of Connecticut. She has ten years of voice training and has studied with Constance Rock and Lisa Williamson. She currently works as a voice and piano teacher both independently and at Company ‘N’ Tempo in Cromwell. She is a choral scholar at St. Mark’s Episcopal Chapel and a member of the UConn Rolling Tones a cappella group.
